Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an elite martial
art developed by the Gracie Family of Brazil from traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.
It was specifically designed to allow a smaller person to defeat a larger person
through the use of position, leverage and technique.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu takes a very
realistic approach to self defence making it extremely effective in realistic
situations.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu can be divided into
three areas of practice, self defence techniques, sport techniques, and vale
tudo or no holds barred techniques.
The self defence techniques are designed
to deal with unexpected aggression in real life such as a fist fight or an
attacker coming at you with a weapon etc.
The sport aspect of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
emphasizes technical skills with points being awarded for gaining advantageous
fighting positions such as take downs, mount, back, etc. The objective is to
make your opponent submit using one of a variety of techniques such as arm
locks, shoulder locks, wrist locks, chokes, ankle locks and knee bars. The
sporting situation gives practitioners the ability to hone their skill against a
live resisting opponent.
The third way Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is
practised is vale tudo, NHB or MMA. This side of the art has become very
popular with television events such as the UFC and PRIDE events. In Vale Tudo
students learn to defend against a well rounded skilled opponent. Competitors
can use almost any type of attack and submission to try and get an advantage
over their opponent.
